Cover vs Cover

So I was at my local independent bookstore cruising through the Young Adult section and I saw the paperback of Nightshade by Andrea Cremer and I screamed...literally in the middle of the bookstore.  I have to admit it was not one of my finer moments.  I was horrified by what they did to the cover.  I'll let it speak for itself.

What do you think?  I just love the hardcover version so much that it surprised me to see the paperback version.  Here are some other hardcover to paperback cover changes.

So which do you like better?  Which do you prefer and why?

  1. Really interesting post! I actually didn't even know publishers did that.

For the first one, I liked the hard cover better.
For the second one, I liked the paperback better.
For the third one, I actually liked both versions but if i had to decide, I suppose it has to be the paperback.

  2. I think its a shame they changed the nightshade cover, the hardback one really stands out, whereas the paperback looks like so many other covers out there. It also looks quite adult urban fantasy as well.

    The Cait Files

  3. I hate what they did to the Nightshade cover. Wolfsbane looks even worse.

But The Sky is Everywhere has the prettiest paperback!

  4. Yup, Love the Hardcover better. For some reason the design is so much better for all 3 books you listed.

  5. Lisa! I'm horrified too! Who in their right mind thought that new cover would be better than the hardback cover. It has to be about the stupidest thing I've ever seen and trust me, I've seen a lot of stupid.

    LOL

I hate that my hardcovers of If I Stay/Where She Went don't match. It makes me sad. :(

  6. I always think it's funny when they redo the cover for paperback books. Maybe it's just because I see the hardcovers first, but they're usually always my favorites. :)

  7. I love comparing covers. Nightshade definitely HC, The Sky Is Everywhere PB and If I Stay PB.

  8. I think it's a shame, what they did to the Nightshade/Wolfsbane covers. Seriously? They look like any random urban fantasy cover out there.

As far as The Sky is Everywhere? I prefer books that don't have cover models. So the copy I own is hard cover.

Saying that, I prefer the hard cover version of If I Stay, but when I bought it, I was on a budget, and got the paperback.
