From GoodreadsIn the town of Morganville, vampires and humans live in relative peace. Student Claire Danvers has never been convinced, though especially with the arrival of Mr. Bishop, an ancient, old-school vampire who cares nothing about harmony. What he wants from the town's living and its dead is unthinkably sinister. It's only at a formal ball, attended by vampires and their human dates, that Claire realizes the elaborately evil trap he's set for Morganville.

Rachel Caine is the queen of the cliffhangers.  I feel like every novel in this series ends with a cliffhanger.  Instead of the conflict being resolved nicely, it is almost as if we're left in the middle of the book.  It's impossible to stop reading this series because you never feel satisfied by the ending...you're always left wanting to know what happens next.  It really is a brilliant way to hook readers, but at the same time I kind of want a ending and not have to wait until the next book to get it.

The one thing that really continues in this book and is possibly the main reason I am so addicted to this series is the tension between Shane and Claire.  I understand that Claire is 16 and Shane is 18, but Rachel Caine gives them so much sexual tension without any real action that it keeps you wondering when Shane is going to drop his morals or Claire is going to finally win and seduce him.

I personally hope they do hold out a little longer just to keep with the story line.  Of course I want them to finally hook up eventually, but the tension is almost just as good.

As for the book itself, it is slow at parts and then at the end it explodes.  The unexpected happens and you are thrown for quite a loop.  I'm not sure I understood everything that happened and I hope it is explained a little more later in the series.

Be prepared to stay up late just to finish this novel, and make sure you have the next in the series on hand too so you can dive right in.

  1. I have not read this series, but I keep hearing great things about it. I do want to try the first book, just to see if it's really good and something for me. I do have to say that I'm not a fan of slow parts. ;) Great review.
