Movies before books?

So many books are getting turned into movies that it's not uncommon to read your favorite book and then go see the movie version, but how common is it to see the movie and then go read the book?  Just the other day I saw a preview for I Am Number Four and I went to the bookstore to pick up the book because I wanted to read it before seeing the movie.  I know of multiple movie previews (I Am Number Four, Percy Jackson, etc) that made me go and read the book before I saw the movie, but how many movies have I watched first and then went on to read the book?  I can think of three...Romeo and Juliet, A Walk to Remember, and Misery?

What about you?  Which movies have you seen before you read the books?  And which format did you like better?

  1. I don't think I've ever seen a movie before reading the book. I'm usually disappointed by movie versions of books. In fact, I refused to go see the Percy Jackson movie because the previews were drastically different than the book. I loved the series so much that I didn't want to ruin it by seeing a movie that in my mind, took too many liberties.

  2. I usually read the book first, except in some cases where I didn't even know the book existed until the movie came out. And most of the time I think the book was better, I think the only movies I liked better than their books were "Inkheart" and "Bridge to Terabithia".

  3. I've watched Percy Jackson, but I haven't read the books yet. I also saw the first four Harry Potter movies before reading the series. I think that might be why the Harry Potter movies didn't bother me as much as some of the other people who have read the books.

  4. I usually read the book before I go see the movie. I read I am Number Four just because I wanted to go see the movie. The only time I didn't do this was with Harry Potter. I only first read the series about 2 years ago, I was stubborn and didn't want to read them....which was stupid!

  6. Good question. I either read the book or watch the film. On the rare occasions when I've done both I've been disappointed. Most of the time movies do not follow the story line of the book.
