Review of Matched by Ally Condie

Title: Matched
Author: Ally Condie
Published by: Dutton Juvenile
Pages: 384
Source: Borrowed from Library
Format: Audiobook
Rating: ★★★

Summary from Goodreads: Cassia has always trusted the Society to make the right choices for her: what to read, what to watch, what to believe. So when Xander's face appears on-screen at her Matching ceremony, Cassia knows with complete certainty that he is her ideal mate . . . until she sees Ky Markham's face flash for an instant before the screen fades to black. The Society tells her it's a glitch, a rare malfunction, and that she should focus on the happy life she's destined to lead with Xander. But Cassia can't stop thinking about Ky, and as they slowly fall in love, Cassia begins to doubt the Society's infallibility and is faced with an impossible choice: between Xander and Ky, between the only life she's known and a path that no one else has dared to follow.

I was intrigued when I first heard about this book.  What could be better than a statistical program telling you who would make you the most happy and be the perfect mate?  I guess that is the worst thing and the best thing.  I'd love for someone to tell me right now who my husband will be and that he'll make me perfectly happy my entire life, but at the same time I'd be very resentful because I didn't get any say in the matter...well unless it was Eric Northman then no complaints here!

Cassia started out being the perfect daughter, friend, and citizen until she saw two faces on her ideal match screen.  Things started to go a little haywire then and she started questioning everything.  At first I wasn't a huge fan of Cassia.  I tend to like people who rebel and stir up a little trouble and she just seemed so complacent (aka boring, she really needed to liven up a little).  Soon though as she gets to know Ky better she starts to realize The Society is not there to help everyone out and make them happy they are there to control everything.

Let me tell you if I was part of this Society I would get kicked out so fast and become an aberration because I really don't like people trying to control my actions and my life.  It scares me and angers me when people think they can have absolutely control over another human being.  Plus they control what they eat.  I would definitely have some words with The Society if they tried to take away my popcorn or chocolate.  I'd go all kung-fu ninja on their butts.

As for Ky and Xander, each boy has their own qualities both good and bad.  I don't really have a team picked out yet and I think that is because I didn't really connect with either of them.  Maybe some mysterious hottie will show up in the next novel?  Well, a girl can wish right!

Overall, I enjoyed the book and look forward to reading Crossed

Banned Book Review: The Earth, My Butt and Other Big Round Things by Carolyn Mackler

Title:  The Earth, My Butt and Other Big Round Things
Author: Carolyn Mackler
Published by: Candlewick Press
Pages: 256
Source: Bought
Format: Paperback
Rating: ★★★★

Summary From Goodreads: Fifteen-year-old Virginia Shreves has a larger-than-average body and a plus-size inferiority complex, especially when she compares herself to her slim, brilliant, picture-perfect family. But that’s before a shocking phone call — and a horrifying allegation — about her rugby-star brother changes everything. With irreverent humor and surprising gravity, Carolyn Mackler creates an endearingly blunt heroine who speaks to every teen who struggles with family expectations, and proves that the most impressive achievement is to be true to yourself.

The Earth, My Butt and Other Big Round Things was on the ALA's 2009 list of Top Ten Most Challenged Books.  According to Marshall University, it was banned for offensive language, sexual content, unsuitable for age group and being anti-family.

That being said, I thought this would be the perfect book to read in celebration of Banned Books Week.  I must admit I went into this novel thinking it would be a cute, light read about a girl dealing with body issues.  I was blown away; this novel was so much more complex.

I loved Virgina.  I thought she was very real and battles with weigh issues typical to teenagers.  Most teenagers care a lot about their body images.  They either think they are too fat, or too skinny, too short, or too tall, etc.  I think Virgina was an extremely strong individual and someone I'd love to have as a friend.  She has such a quirky and unique personality that you can't help but love her and cheer her on as she finally rebels against the ideal image of who she is suppose to be.

To truly discuss about how I felt about this novel I'd have to give away a huge spoiler and for those of you who know me, that is not my style so let me just say that I was shocked.  I'm so proud of how Virgina reacted to this horrific incident and how it really made her evaluate her family and her life. I was appalled by how her family acted throughout the entire novel.  Her dad and her sister grew on me by the end but I couldn't stand her mother or her brother.

The Earth, My Butt and Other Big Round Things was a wonderfully written novel dealing with complex issues and the challenges of facing them.

Waterfall Wednesdays (Week 5)

What are Waterfall Wednesdays you ask?  Each Wednesday for the month of September we will be reading, discussing, chatting, and gawking over the Hotties from Waterfall the amazing first novel in the River of Time series by Lisa Bergren.  Come join in the fun.
Here is the schedule of events:
August 31- Chapters 1-6 Hosted by Tina at Tinasbookreviews
Sept 7- Chapters 7-11 Hosted by Missie at The Unread Reader
Sept 14- Chapters 12-17 Hosted by Joy&Serena at Edgy Inspirational Romance
Sept 21- Chapters 18-23 Hosted by Jenny at Supernatural Snark
Sept 28- Chapters 24-28 and Wrap Up Hosted by Nic at Irresistible Reads

Need more incentive?  The amazingly talented and wonderful Lisa Bergren has offered a trilogy set of her series to one winner each week (signed if the winner is from the U.S.) and an overall chance to win a set of earrings from Venice.  How freaking amazing is that?  I told you she was wonderful.

Discussion Questions Chapters 24-28

1.  After Gabi is injured, the doctor gives her a tonic.  Gabi questions the doctor several times what is in it but he refuses to tell.  Would have you taken the tonic in Gabi situation? Depending on how much pain I was in.  If the pain was unbearable I would have taken it, but otherwise probably not.  I'm not a big fan of taking medicine so I wouldn't like to take something, especially when I have no idea what was in it.  I think I would be very suspicious of any medicine they tried to give me...I mean, they used to use mercury for healing ointments, fillings and cosmetics so who knows what poison they be unintentionally (and maybe intentionally) giving me.

2.  Before the games Gabi asks Lia to let Lord Forabosch win in the archery event as people especially Lord Forabosch are becoming suspicious of them.  But during the games Lord Forabosch upsets Lia trying to throw her off her game. So Lia decides to win.  Do you think she did the right thing by not letting Lord Forabosch bully her or do you think she took an unnecessary risk?
I was so proud of Lia at that moment.  I think I may have even yelled "that's my girl!"  I know the right thing for her and Gabi's situation would have been to let him win, but seriously that guy was a jerk.  I'd have wanted to beat him too just to wipe that smug smile off his face and then I would have shot him in the foot with one of my arrows.  *laughs wickedly*

3.  When Gabi is dying and she and Lia decide to return to the tombs so they can get the cure at home but they have to tell Marcello the truth.  Even though Marcello thinks that it is madness that they are from the future he believes in Gabi because he loves her.  Do you think this is believable?  What would you have done if you were Marcello?
I don't think it is totally believable but I'm glad that Marcello is a good enough guy that he still believes in Gabi and if she says something is so he is going to go with it.  If I was Marcello I hope I would have done the same thing by helping her out with her mission to return home.

 4.       In the end Gabi and Lia return home.  Do you think Gabi will return to Marcello? Would you go back?
Of course she will return to Marcello...there are two more books in the series!  But seriously, I think their love transcends time (pun intended) and I don't think there is much that will keep them apart.  At least I hope not because I want to see some more steamy action between the two.

5.  Looking back at Waterfall what was your favourite moment?
My favorite moment of the book is not really a moment per say, but more of a character trait.  I just loved Luca's teasing and sometimes sexual comments.  He added comic relief and a little bit of spice to the story.  Luca...if you ever make the time jump, I'm here waiting.

I've had so much fun doing Waterfall Wednesday's and I just want to thank Tina from TinasBookReviews, Missie at The Unread Reader, Joy &Serena at Edgy Inspirational Romance, Nic at Irresistible Reads and Jenny from Supernatural Snark for hosting this wonderful event and to Lisa Bergren for making this all possible and for supplying the wickedly cool prizes!

Top Ten Tuesday

Today I'm participating in Top Ten Tuesday hosted by The Broke and the Bookish.

Top Ten Books I Want To Reread

1.  The Harry Potter Series by J.K. Rowling.  This is one of my favorite series and I have reread it many times but there is just something magical (no pun intended...ok maybe a little) about it.
Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone
2. Breaking Dawn by Stephanie Meyers.  I want to reread this before the movie comes out so I can remind myself what happened.

Breaking Dawn (Twilight, #4)
3. Perfect Chemistry by Simone Elkeles.  This book was Hot, Hot, Hot.  I miss Alex and Brittany and want to fall in love with them all over.

Perfect Chemistry (Perfect Chemistry, #1)
4. Wuthering Heights by Emily Bronte.  I didn't think I would like this book and at first I didn't, but then seeing how much love Kathy and Heathcliff had for each other and how the love drove them to do maddening things captured my heart.  I would love to reread it and see if my opinions changed.

Wuthering Heights
5. The Sookie Stackhouse/Southern Vampires Series by Charlaine Harris.  I can never get enough of Eric!

Dead Until Dark (Sookie Stackhouse, #1)
6. Jellicoe Road by Melina Marchetta.  Oh I really love this novel and it feels like an old friend to me.  If I had time I would reread this novel over and over again.
Jellicoe Road

That's all I can think of for now.  I'm not sure I will be rereading any of these books, or others for that matter, anytime soon unless I meet a sugar daddy, quit my job and just chill on some remote beach and read for the rest of my life.  *sighs*

Review of Brooklyn by Colm Toibin

Title: Brooklyn
Author: Colm Toibin
Published by: Scribner Book Company
Pages: 272
Source: Borrowed from a friend
Format: Paperback
Rating: ★★★

Summary from Goodreads: Eilis Lacey has come of age in small-town Ireland in the years following World War Two. Though skilled at bookkeeping, she cannot find a job in the miserable Irish economy. When an Irish priest from Brooklyn to sponsor Eilis in America — to live and work in a Brooklyn neighborhood "just like Ireland" — she decides she must go, leaving her fragile mother and her charismatic sister behind. Eilis finds work in a department store on Fulton Street, and when she least expects it, finds love. Tony, a blond Italian from a big family, slowly wins her over with patient charm. He takes Eilis to Coney Island and Ebbets Field, and home to dinner in the two-room apartment he shares with his brothers and parents. He talks of having children who are Dodgers fans. But just as Eilis begins to fall in love with Tony, devastating news from Ireland threatens the promise of her future.

This was an adult novel that I read for my adult literature book club.  I don't think I ever would have picked up this novel on my own, but I am glad that I read it.

As most of you know I usually read young adult literature but I used to read a ton of adult literature too before I started blogging.  So when I picked up this novel I was swept away by it.  There was a different tone to it than YA books and it was like a drink of water I desperately needed.

I absolutely adored the first two thirds of this novel.  While I didn't connect with Eilis I still enjoyed her story and loved watching her change and become her own person.  I thought it was great that she was interested in an education and in working instead of just finding a husband and becoming a house wife.  This was not common for the time period and I'm glad that she was more focused on her schooling then she was on Tony.

Tony was the perfect guy.  If he came knocking at my door I wouldn't let him go.  I like how family oriented he was and he cared so much for Eilis.  He changed around his schedule and would walk her home from class just so he'd get to spend a couple of minutes with her.  I know...doesn't he just sound like the sweetest guy you've ever met?

As for the ending, while I won't give anything away, I did not like it at all.  My euphoria from the start of the book quickly vanished displaced by unease and contempt.

Overall I did enjoy this novel and it was a nice change from my typical reading genres.

Review of Wolfsbane by Andrea Cremer

Title: Wolfsbane (Nightshade #2)
Author: Andrea Cremer
Published by: Penguin Young Readers Group
Pages: 390
Source: Borrowed from the library
Format: Audiobook
Rating: ★★★★

Summary from Goodreads: When Calla Tor wakes up in the lair of the Searchers, her sworn enemies, she’s certain her days are numbered. But then the Searchers make her an offer—one that gives her the chance to destroy her former masters and save the pack—and the man—she left behind. Is Ren worth the price of her freedom? And will Shay stand by her side no matter what? Now in control of her own destiny, Calla must decide which battles are worth fighting and how many trials true love can endure and still survive.

I absolutely loved Nightshade and a huge reason for that is I loved Calla and Ren.  For me, there was no love triangle because Shay was not even a contender in my mind.  Literally, I couldn't fathom the idea of Calla liking Shay and I just assumed he was added in as this character to show off how amazing Ren is compared to others.

That being said I was really torn about this novel because it mostly involved Calla and Shay.  As I was listening to it there were times I was screaming out loud at Shay telling him to stop talking and yelling at Calla that she was crazy for listening to Shay and doing the things she was doing.  (Good thing it's been cold here so the other drivers on the road don't think I'm too nuts as I'm driving to work in the morning yelling at fictional characters like I have any control over their actions.)

Despite that though, Wolfsbane was extremely interesting.  We happened to learn much more history involving the Searchers, Keepers and Guardians.  I loved the new characters and thought they fit amazingly into the story line.  They were fierce, protective, amazing fighters and helped to keep things comical when tensions heightened.  I also enjoyed seeing some of the old characters again and hearing more of their stories.  I don't want to give too much away but some we definitely get to see where pack loyalties lie.

Overall it wasn't my favorite book but I'm a bit biased on the whole love triangle thing so if you like Shay then you'll love this book....and if you don't like Shay (Yea Team Ren!) it's still a great read.

Discussion Questions Chapters 18-23
1. Gabi and Lia both face several life and death situations in these chapters, having to pick up weapons in defense of those they love and experiencing first hand the brutality of close combat. If you had the choice between picking up a weapon and standing on the front lines or staying behind to tend to the wounded as necessary, which would you choose?
Oh geez...a tough question right off the bat.  Yikes, I would love to say I have some fierce Xena Warrior Princess genes somewhere in my blood but I'd be completely lying.  I'm all for strong, kick-butt women but I'm sorry to say I'm not one of them.  The sad thing is that I don't think I'd be good at the nurturing the wounded part either.  I'd worry too much about what was happening on the front line and I'd be totally distracted and probably getting sick myself from all the gross sights and smells.

2. Both girls get to wear extraordinary gowns to their victory celebration; what would your dream medieval gown look like?
I think I'd like something in green or cream. I'd want a simple cut and maybe strapless to show off my shoulders and other...um...assets.  A drop waste would be gorgeous with some tasteful gold adornments. I'm thinking this dress would be perfect for me!

3. Gabi has crude stitches put in and must endure both their removal as well as the cauterization of the wound. How is your threshold for pain? Do you think you would have simply gritted your teeth as Gabi does?
My pain threshold is incredibly low.  I'm pretty sure I would have had to drink enough alcohol to pass out before anyone got near me and those stitches...either putting them in or taking them out.

4. Marcello wants to properly court Gabi after they express mutual feelings of affection, wanting to speak with her mother about his intentions. What do you think is the most romantic aspect of medieval courtship?
I think the most romantic thing is the respect Marcello shows for Gabi.  He stands by and supports her and at the same time lets her be herself.  He treats her like a lady and never expects more of her than she can offer. He is a true gentleman to the core of his being and it shows in his actions.

5. Gabi and Lia find themselves with conflicting desires toward the end with Lia wanting to return home and Gabi hoping to stay. Do you think that Gabi is being unfair to Lia for wanting to stay, or is Lia being unfair to Gabi for demanding they go? A little of both?
I definitely think it is a little of both.  Lia didn't have a good experience in this new time period.  She doesn't like it and doesn't really connect with anyone (though I really think she should give Luca a chance...but if she doesn't I'm more than willing to give him a chance).  She wants her old life back and can't understand my Gabi wants to stay.  Gabi on the other-hand has had a wonderful experience and even met someone she cares for deeply.  She wants to stay to see where things will go.  As for which one is being the most unfair and deciding if they should stay or leave; it's an extremely hard decision that I'm glad I don't have to make...I'm pleading the fifth on that one.

Top Ten Tuesday

Today I'm participating in Top Ten Tuesday hosted by The Broke and the Bookish.

Top Ten Books I Feel As Though Everyone Has Read But Me

1 and 2. Catching Fire and Mockingjay by Suzanne Collins.  I read The Hunger Games and while I was captivated by the story, it was a little graphic for me, especially knowing it was a young adult book.  I'm not one for physical violence so a whole sporting event aimed at killing the other competitors was too much for me.

3. The Pretty Little Liars Series by Sara Shepard.  I've heard good things about this series, but I feel like I have so much to read that I can't start another series right now.

4. The Forest of Hands and Teeth by Carrie Ryan.  I have this novel on my shelf and I've been meaning to read it but for some reason I just can't get over the Zombie thing.  I like my paranormal creatures sexy and I can't imagine zombies as sexy.  But I do want to read it sense everyone who has read it loved it and said the Zombies were not as they expected.

5. Divergent by Veronica Roth.  I have been so excited to read this book and thanks to Erica at The Book Cellar I now have a signed arc.  I'm can't wait to read this because everyone keeps talking about how good it is.  The next chance I get I'm definitely going to read it.

6. Dark Lover by J.R. Ward.  I feel like everyone and their mothers have devoured and drooled over this series and I still haven't read the first book.  What is wrong with me?  I promise to remedy this soon.

7. The Lovely Bones by Alice Sebold.  I have the book and the audiobook.  I started to listen to the audiobook but I couldn't get through the first disk.  I started crying hysterically in the car and had to pull over.  I shut it off right away and ever since then I can't find the nerve to pick it up again.

8. The Mediator Series by Meg Cabot.  I'm not a big ghost person so this series never really peaked my interest.  I have heard wonderful things about it and I like a lot of her other novels, but again I don't know if I have time to pick up another series.

9. Vixen by Jillian Larkin.  Why have I not read this novel yet?  It sounds so great and right up my alley.  I always though that in a past life I was a flapper.  I would have made a fabulous flapper and I think that is what I'm going to be for Halloween!  I love when you get great ideas through blogging.  Yea I'm so excited...any costume ideas?

10. The Body Finder by Kimberly Derting.  This sounds like a great book and it sounds like most people have loved it, but I'm not sure how I feel about a girl who can sense the dead.  It kinda freaks me out to tell you the truth and that is why I haven't read it yet.

Review of Chain Reaction by Simone Elkeles

Title: Chain Reaction (Perfect Chemistry #3)
Author: Simone Elkeles
Published by: Walker Books for Young Readers
Pages: 308
Source: Bought
Format: Hardcover
Rating: ★★★★★

Summary from Goodreads: Luis Fuentes has always been sheltered from the gang violence that nearly destroyed his brothers’ lives. But that didn’t stop him from taking risks—whether he’s scaling a mountain in the Rockies or dreaming of a future as an astronaut, Luis can’t stop looking for the next thrill. Nikki Cruz lives her life by three rules—boys lie to get their way, don’t trust a boy who says “I love you,” and never date a boy from the south side of Fairfield. Her parents may be from Mexico, but as a doctor’s daughter, she has more in common with her north-side neighbors than the Latino Blood at her school. Then she meets Luis at Alex’s wedding, and suddenly, she’s tempted to break all her rules. Getting Nikki to take a chance on a southsider is Luis’s biggest challenge, until he finds himself targeted by Chuy Soto, the new head of the Latino Blood. When Chuy reveals a disturbing secret about Luis’s family, the youngest Fuentes finds himself questioning everything he’s ever believed to be true. Will his feelings for Nikki be enough to stop Luis from entering a dark and violent world and permanently living on the edge.

Oh Luis, you were always the sweet innocent little brother...when did you grow up and become so damn sexy?

While Luis may be the youngest Fuentes brother, he still has the fire and charm of his two older brothers.  He may be the smart straight-laced brother buy he  has a wild side and the need for an adrenaline rush and what better way to get that rush than by flirting with a sassy Latina lady who won't give him the time of day.

Nikki is a character that is so real you expect her to step out of the pages and into your life.  I had the chance to meet Simone Elkeles last week and she said the first time she wrote Nikki, Simone Elkeles herself didn't actually like her or feel that her readers could relate to Nikki so she had to rewrite her character.  I feel Simone Elkeles did an amazing job as she always does with her characters.

For me this novel had more surprises than the last two novels.  Unexpected things happened that left you gasping and tearing through the novel at lightening speed just to find out what happens next.

I absolutely love this series and I'm sad to see if come to an end.  If you want a chance to read Chain Reaction come enter my giveaway here

Review of Wintertown by Stephen Emond

Title: Wintertown
Author: Stephen Emond
Published by:Little, Brown Books for Young Readers
Pages: 336
Source:  Once Upon a Twilight Book Tours
Format: ARC
Available: December 5th, 2011
Rating: ★★★★

Summary from Goodreads: Every winter, straight-laced, Ivy League bound Evan looks forward to a visit from Lucy, a childhood pal who moved away after her parent's divorce. But when Lucy arrives this year, she's changed. The former "girl next door" now has chopped dyed black hair, a nose stud, and a scowl. But Evan knows that somewhere beneath the Goth, "Old Lucy" still exists, and he's determined to find her... even if it means pissing her off.

Before Wintertown I had never read a young adult novel that had drawings included with the story.  I really enjoyed the comic strip type depictions of various events that were occurring in the novel.  It gave me a totally different perspective into the situations between Lucy and Evan and I felt I connected more with Evan and his amazing artistic ability.

While I didn't fall in love with the book from the first page it has this quality about it where it keeps nagging and pushing and eventually you can't help but like it.  Evan is a very likable character...in fact I was him (well besides the man part).  He was studious, volunteered, was involved in extracurricular activities and was an all around great guy.  He concentrated completely on his school work and did everything to please his parents, that is until Lucy came back into town.

Lucy was a very raw character for me.  I knew she was dealing with some serious baggage and yet at the most unexpected times this bright and wonderful young lady would pop out between all the grief.  You could tell she really cared for Evan, she just didn't know how to show it.  She was scared of not only her feelings but also about her past.

The best thing about this novel was the dialogue.  It was entertaining and funny.  I loved Lucy's sarcastic comments and Evan's endless babbling.  It was a cute and enjoyable read that left me feeling happy.

Lastly I want to thank Once Upon a Twilight for including me in this book tour.

Simone Elkeles Author Event and Chain Reaction Giveaway

On Monday night I was lucky enough to go to my favorite independent bookstore and hear Simone Elkeles discuss her novels and everything surrounding the writing processes.

If you've met her you know how wonderfully fabulous she is and if you haven't well let me tell you she completely and utterly is.  She's hilarious.  She actually found Alexander F. Rodriguez (from Katy Perry's Hot N Cold music video) on facebook and emailed him to ask if he'd be in her book trailer!  You gotta love a girl with guts.  As the event continued, she went on to gush about Alex and Giancarlo Vidrio, and Gabriel Chavarria (from Freedom Writers) at one point calling Alex her new religion.  She literally compared him to Jesus saying he can do anything from water skiing to surfing.  Alexander F. Rodriquez is her perfect Alex as are each of the guys she chose to portray her characters in the book trailers.  Any chicka who can write the hottest guys and the steamiest love scenes and then find gorgeous actors to play them in her videos is my kinda gal.  Woot woot! Check out these hotties in the book trailer for Chain Reactions.

Anyway, I had the most amazing time.  I seriously think this is one of the best author events I've ever been to.  She treated it more like a casual chat with your besties than some prestigious event.  And while I was there to get my books signed, I thought I would share the love and had her sign a copy of Chain Reaction for one lucky winner!!  Also she had these posters of the Perfect Chemistry Series Hotties (she brought them for us because she daughter pointed out that you can see a little too much of Alex than is appropriate for schools) and I had her sign some too.

So to wrap that all up I'm giving away two prizes.  The first winner gets a SIGNED copy of Chain Reaction and a SIGNED poster of the Perfect Chemistry Series Hotties and the second winner will get a SIGNED poster of the Perfect Chemistry Series Hotties!

Waterfall Wednesdays (Week 3)

Discussion Questions Chapters 12-17
1. In Siena, on her way to the ball at Palazzo Pubblico, Gabi likened her experience to being on the red carpet at the Academy Awards, the goal being "to see and be seen." If you were a peasant, watching from the crowd, what would you be thinking as this procession passed by?
I'd would say "WOW...look at all these yummy men and all those gorgeous dresses."  If I'm being truthful I'd probably be more than a little jealous of all the jewels people were wearing and imagining how just one of their dresses would feed my family of a month.  As much as I'd admire everyone I'd also be hoping one of those men would ditch their dates and come sweep me off my poor, broke and hungry butt and turn me into a princess.  Where is my glass slipper?

2. Though quite nervous about dancing at the ball, Gabi discovers a strange feeling of connection to the time, the people, and the society through the unified beauty of the dance. Have you ever been in a position where you felt out of your element, but, in one, pinpointed moment, became a part of or connected to something bigger than your fear?
I often have to present my research at these national conferences in front of all these really important people in my field.  I'm often nervous and just feel like I don't belong with all these crazy smart and prestigious people.  But then in the middle of all these presentations, I'm really enjoying everyone's research and completely feel connected to this wonderful community just by our shared interest.  It's quite an adventure and one I'm so glad I get to experience.

3. The kiss. Oh, the kiss. When Marcello finally kisses Gabi, he believes the experience to be proof that they are meant to be together. What did you think about his assumption? Were you surprised at Gabi's reaction to it? Have you ever experienced a kiss that seemed to be prophetic in a similar (or opposite!) way?
I think now-a-days his assumptions would be considered sweet but also possibly a little delusional.  If the first time a guy kissed me he told me we were meant to be together I'd probably run away...well in less it was a really good kiss then I'd stick around for a while and pretend I didn't hear his crazy comment.  For Gabi's reaction I completely understand it.  She wants Marcello but she also feel guilty because of Lady Rossi and because she is not from this time.  Oh the drama!  As for prophetic kisses...I'm still waiting for one!

4. Many go through their teen years with a subdued sense of immortality. Do you think Gabi has a sense of this teen feeling? And did you think Gabi's converse observation, "Sometimes death came hunting and there was no way to cut it off at the pass." was informed more by the experience of losing her father, her self-admitted closet hypochondria, or the forced maturation of being transported to a different time? How does this observation show Gabi's growth as a character?
I do think Gabi has some sense of immortality.  She knows she has this mission to rescue her sister and she is going to do it no matter the costs.  I think Gabi's observation of death has come from her time-traveling back into this foreign time where there were gallant knights and people did fight to the death.  She saw battles and realized they were not romantical (thank you Anne Shirley for Anne of Green Gables for that wonderful word) and people died in horrible ways.  I think Gabi has grown so much for this whiny character to someone who is willing to risk her life and not only help her sister but to help her new friends for their freedom for the continual fighting with the Paratores.  Her selflessness and sacrifice shows just how much she was truly become an amazing person.

5. In the span of a few moments, Gabi goes from sword-wielding teen beauty to man-killing warrior. Did you think her realization of the finality of death -- and her justification for its necessity -- was realistic? And, in her slippers, could you have done the same?
I think people will do anything for love.  My sister is the closest person to me and if she were in trouble I'd be there in a heart-beat.  I don't know if I could kill to save myself, but to save the ones I love I truly believe I could do it.  I'd be racked with insane guilt afterwards and probably locked in the crazy hospital but my love one's would be alive.  I think with Gabi being in the time she was in with fighting and death occurring all around her I think her actions and realizations were realistic.

Top Ten Tuesday

Today I'm participating in Top Ten Tuesday hosted by The Broke and the Bookish.

Top Ten Books I Read Because Of Another Blogger (In honor of BBAW!)

1. Anna and the French Kiss by Stephanie Perkins.  So many bloggers raved about this book that I just had to pick it up.  I'm so glad I did because it was amazing.

2. The Vampire Academy series by Richelle Mead.  I kept hearing all this talk about how fierce and totally kick-butt this girl named Rose was and it made me want to see what all the fuss was about.

3. Waterfall by Lisa T. Bergren.  I signed up to read Waterfall as part of an ARC tour from Books With Bite.  It soon became one of my favorite reads of 2011.

4. The Mortal Instruments series by Cassandra Clare.  When everyone couldn't stop jabbering about this hot, warrior named Jace I knew these books would be for me...and I'm team Jace all the way! I mean look at the cover.  How gorgeous is that body?!?!

5. Beastly by Alex Flinn.  I won this book from All-Consuming Books and I just finished it.  It is a fun take on the classic fairy tale Beauty and the Beast.

6. A Long Long Sleep by Anna Sheehan.  I read this book as part of the Debut Author Challenge hosted by The Story Siren.  This novel was absolutely amazing.  If you haven't read it yet, move it to the top of your TBR pile.

7. The DUFF by Kody Keplinger.  I kept seeing this book all over the blogosphere and the reason I picked it up is that it seemed to get great reviews despite the offensive and mean acronym of DUFF.  They always say never judge a book by it's cover, while I learned to also never judge a book by it's title.

8. Paranormalcy by Kiersten White.  Another book the was hyped up by every blogger.

These last two I haven't read yet but I bought them and they are on my TBR shelve because of bloggers.

9 and 10.  Kiss of Midnight by Lara Adrian and Dark Lover by J.R. Ward.  I bought both of these because of the yummy descriptions and sexy pictures on The Unread Reader's meme, My Book Boyfriend.  If you haven't check out the meme...do it now (usually on Wednesday's but for the month of September it's on Tuesdays).  It's Hott, Hott, Hott!
